Total Knee arthroplasty (TKA)

Introduction : total knee replacement (TKA) is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or worn knee joint. To treat degenerative knee pathologies, TKA has become a preferred treatment option, offering patients pain relief and improved mobility.

Surgery objective : the main objective of this surgery is to remove the worn joint surfaces of the knee and replace them with prosthetic implants. Often made of metal elements and polyethylene, the implants restore normal knee function, reducing pain and improving the patient's quality of life.

TKA implantation techniques

1. Conventional technique :
Traditional method, with planning carried out through X-rays and surgery performed using instruments.

2. Computer-assisted navigation :
A technology using bone markings and a computer to determine the position of bone cuts

3. Custom cutting guides :
Based on personalized instrumentation for each patient, this technique offers a custom made and extremely precise surgery.

4. Mako robotic technique :
By combining robotics with surgery, this method ensures unprecedented precision during implantation. It is particularly useful for certain surgical procedures.

5. Nest AR (augmented reality) technology :
Augmented reality provides an overlay of digital images over the surgical site in real time, improving visualisation and accuracy. It allows for continuous monitoring throughout the surgical procedure.

TKA in figures : the quality and effectiveness of TKA are reflected in its clinical outcomes. With an impressive survival rate of more than 95% at ten years, this surgery has become well-established as a reliable intervention for treating degenerative knee pathologies.

The Geneva Knee Centre’s commitment : at this centre, each patient is unique. We provide the highest quality care using the most advanced techniques. The medical team is committed to adopting and integrating these innovations, ensuring patient safety and satisfaction by offering the best in TKA.

In addition, clinical follow-up has been put in place for each patient, namely by compiling and analysing post-operative scores. These data make it possible to compare results with the international literature, guaranteeing the continuous improvement of our practices. They also give patients an objective overview of their progress.
