Revision of the total knee replacement

Introduction : the revision of a total knee replacement, commonly referred to as "prosthesis revision", is a demanding and technical surgical procedure. It requires perfect mastery of the initial prosthetic surgery and solid expertise in the field of revision. Our approach at the Geneva Knee Centre involves rigorous planning to anticipate each stage of the operation and to respond to every eventuality.

Indications and diagnosis : the centre welcomes regularly patients whose initial operations were conducted at other hospitals or clinics and who were left dissatisfied with their postoperative results. Each patient receives a thorough assessment to identify the underlying causes of their dissatisfaction. This diagnostic evaluation is crucial and is carried out with meticulous care.

Potential reasons for a prosthesis revision include :

Technical errors during the initial procedure
Aseptic loosening of the prosthesis (without infection)
Septic loosening (linked to infection)

Revision surgery : a revision prosthesis is similar to a primary one, but it offers a variety of additional options to meet the specific needs of each case. Among these adaptive elements are shims, rods, restraints and other specific components.

During the procedure, each abnormality detected during pre-operative examinations is carefully checked and corrected.

Post-surgery care : post-operative follow-up and rehabilitation are specifically adapted to the corrections made. Each stage of recovery is carefully supervised to ensure the best outcome for the patient.

The Geneva Knee Centre’s commitment : the centre is committed to providing optimal care. The techniques and implants best suited to each patient are selected using the very latest options available from the science and technology in the field.
